The 1-quart plastic canteen was standardised on 14th September 1962, it was made of olive drab polyethylene and replaced the M1910 alluminium/stainless steel version. The plastic canteen came with a stainless stell cup as seen here.
SOG teams would tape Puri-tabs to the screw cap to remind them to purify the water before drinking, teams would typically have 3 canteens on their belt and another 2/3 in their rucksack.
The 2 quart collapsible canteen shown here is the first model that became available in large numbers in 1969. It consisted of a square plastic bladder with a standard canteen cap in the corner. It was carried in a nylon carrier with 2 slide fasteners on the reverse and a shoulder strap. The cover also featured a small pocket for the puri-tabs as used on later M1967/MLCE canteen covers. |
