A SOG mans boonie was a personal thing and a wide variety of shapes and styles wore worn form cut-down OD boonies died black through to NVA style floppy boonies to confuse tracker teams.
SOG teams would often sew a square of the standard orange Signal Panel in the top of their boonie so during extraction it could be turned inside out to show who was a friendly from the air.
The boonies you see here are a 72 dated ripstop boonie (top) and an early poplin boonie (bottom). Standard boonies like these were very rarely worn on "over the fence" missions.
I am still looking for a period cut down/short brim boonie as I have such a large head this is proving to be a problem, if any one has one in a large size (7 1/2 and above) then give me a shout. paul@howsplendid.com |
