This is an XM3 bipod for the M16 rifle, a very simple design by Colt that clips onto teh barrel to provide a more stable shooting pltaform. It is carried in the 2nd model case which is canvas and has a storage pocket for the cleaning kit. These were not used that much but sometimes seen on M16's with Starlight scopes or telescopic scopes.
